"JUNK SPACE"

In the afternoon, we still went on the marathon history class. I have seen the footage that we have learn in the first year, made by Allen Ginsberg. But this time I know more about the point of it. And the idea that he made to play with the wall in China is very interesting and it would help a lot for the new project. Interactive with the interior and exterior space by spinning the wall. Sometime people try to make something very difficult, high technology came with high budget. But for this artist, she chose the simple trchnology like the kid's toy to invent the new product.
Moving to the main point of this lecture, Junk Space and Rem Koolhass. Personally, he is my favourite architect. According to the last project, study from master house, I got Villa Dall Ava by Koolhass and I really enjoy working on it. His work is very attractive in the way that still kept the 5 point of architecture, he's conjent to it. In my point of view, he is not invented the new thing or copy the old architecture. But he's studying from it and use it as the very huge influence. Not only the Villa Dall Ava which can break every rules of modernism and make fun with it. But also CCTV building that is still being stand out from its context until now. He is not just designing but he's the creator that invent the new way of thinking and the new idea of choosing material or color. Another example is the IIT by Mies Vande Role. He can change it into his style and play with the picture of many architect. It's so funny that he can make it as he love Mies and hate Mies at the same times.
"Bigness can created Junk Space,
but Bigness is not always a JunkSpace"
Moreover, I have learn about the "Junk Space" the thing that is surrounding me but I have never recognize it. The fisrt Junkspace is "Leirttown" in 1957, the village that everyone thought it's cool and work for the inhavitant but for some architect, it was not. The idea of very repeatation and everything look the same. Junkspace is the place where people inside don't have to care about the rain or the hot climate outside. Some place we entered it but we can't make sure the orientation or ventilation. And it's all called Junk space. The clear example of this word would be the mobile phone floor at MBK Bangkok. It's no day and night. Further more, the place that I just knew that is call jusk space is Central world. After the political situatuon that happen in Bangkok, we all regret that Central world has broken. But why it can be normally use in some space, the answer is because it's JunkSpace. However,
JUNK SPACE IS NOT = ARCHITECTURE

For architecture, we can understand the context and every detail have reason to support the idea. That's why Rem Koolhass said "Architecture has died for so long ago"
However, Rem's work is not wildly accept by many critics but he still going on his idea and can prove that his architecture is "good". Even though his work is no reference or no proportion to human scale at all, he can still doing it in his way and became one of the greatest architect in the world until now.

EXPRESSIONISM

Monday 21st, March , this is our marathon class. But I can say that it was a really interested class and we are all felt alert until the last minute of it. Because all the lecture is related to the last project and also can help us to express the new idea for the upcoming project as well.
Start with Expressionism, we can see clearer about the development from the last class style, about the post-modernism, it’s a lot more different. They start to hide the structure which is the very opposite idea with modernism, no more transparency and no symmetrical. The first architect that I knew about this idea is one of the greatest architects, Frank Gahry. The very expressive form that he created is a lot and one of it is the “Fish” work. It was surprise me very much,

the very new idea about pop art. Another example that is wildly knew is “Guggenheim Museum”. It was the work that I knew his name and follow his work after that day. It’s break the rule and can really express the idea of Expressionism. It’s attractive by the surface and skin of the metal that conceal all the complex structure inside. He decreased the volume of the big mass by the divided it to be many pieces but actually all the mass are still the same. The interested point is he still kept the traditional plan but try to express the form and use the new technology to achieve this. After this work he still expressing his idea to LA, but it’s more floating and we can see the relationship between the building and it’s context. The building surrounded by the high rise building that looks frozen after this gigantic metal are located. And we were moving to the most favorite building of Frank Garry. It is the big transparency building blended with the context. It’s not just the context but he can keep the front view and the back view of the context. It works by the transparency of façade that function in different way in the day and at the night; at noon this façade will reflect the context on to the surface and also can see through another side of the faced to see the background and at night the light inside will be lighter than exterior space, then the façade will allow outside people to see inside the building. It’s very functional and very beautiful.

In my point of view, I can’t say that which one I like or which one I don’t like or I’d prefer this one than this one. Because I think from the first class to the present class, I can see the changing of architecture from the very beginning to the present and it’s just beautiful. I think, It’s about style and idea of that period of time but it’s all base on the sense of aesthetic and functionalism. For the last break of this morning class, we watched the film or the TV program about the very famous architects; Jean Nouve, Zaha hadi, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano. From this film, I have listen to their idea and it’s very funny. Everyone is just a normal human but they can have a very successful in their life. And all of that still base on “tried” and “tired” of their life. And it gave me the inspiration to working on my project and my work, luckily for every architect, our work is can be created and finished for our part but the object or something that we created will last very long.

POST MODERNISM

"LESS IS BORED"

ONE OF THE ARCHITECTURE CHARMING IS THE WAY THAT PEOPLE CAN THINK DIFFERENT. ARCHITECT CAN ARGUE ABOUT THE HISTORICAL DESIGN AND INVENT SOMETHING NEWS.ROBERT CHARLES VENTURI IS ONE OF THE ARCHITECT THAT INVENTED SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN THE TIME OF " LESS IS MORE". HE SAID HE IS NOT BELIEVE IT. AND HIS WORK CAN PROVE HIS WORD.

THE BEGINNING OF HIS EVOLUTION IS HIS ESSAY, STATED ABOUT COMPLEXITY AND CONTRADICTION IN ARCHITECTURE. AND IT BECAME A VERY OPPOSITE IDEA WITH MODERNISM, IT'S POST-MODERNISM. VENTURI IS ONE OF THE EARLY POST-MODERN SO HE TRY TO DO THE OPPOSITE THING WITH THE IDEA OF LOUISE KHAN WHOSE WORK IS CAME FROM SYMMETRICAL AND HUMAN PROPORTION. WHAT VENTURI WAS TO MAKE A FACADE OF A HOUSE NOT SYMMETRICAL, FOR EXAMPLE, HIS VENTURI HOUSE, THE ROOF HS BEEN CUT TO BE APART FROM EACH OTHER, WINDOW FROM BOTH SIDE ARE NOT THE SAME TO EMPHASIS THE IDEA OF ASYMMETRY, THE WAY HE DECORATED AND ALSO THE COLOR WHICH WAS TRY TO BE NOT NATURAL. HE CHOSE THE BLUE COLOR. IT'S ALL JUST SO DIFFERENT FROM THE IDEA OF KAHN. THE VENTURI HOUSE OBVIOUSLY EXPOSE THE IDEA OF POST-MODERNISM CLEARLY AND TO BE CLEAR, HE MADE FUN WITH HIS DRAWING, " I AM A HOUSE"

ANOTHER MAJOR LEADER OF EARLY POST-MODERNISM SURELY MUST BE PETER EISENMANN. HE IS A VERY STRONG INFLUENCE OF THIS ERA. HE TRY TO CONVINCE EVERYONE INTO THIS IDEA. HIS FAMOUS ONE IS HOUSE VI 1972. I FOUND THAT THIS ONE IS VERY STRENGTH FROM ALL OF THE HISTORY I HAVE READ. IT'S NOT A HOUSE BUT SOME FUNCTION AS A HOUSE. IT'S NOT DERIVE FROM HUMAN SCALE AT ALL. FOR EXAMPLE, IT HAS AN UP SIDE DOWN STAIR CASE, SEPARATED HUSBAND AND WIFE'S BEDS IN THE SAME BEDROOM. THE IDEA ABOUT SYMMETRICAL CANT BE FOUND IN THIS ARCHITECTURE. ALL OF ELEVATION IS NOTHING THE SAME AND ALSO THE SECTIONS OF THIS HOUSE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. HIS INTENTION IS JUST TO DESCRIBE ONLY ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE IS STRONG. IF THE MODERNISM IS BASED ON BLACK AND WHITE, HE IS NOT A RED OR BLUE BUT HE WILL BLEND EVERYTHING OUT AND BECOME GREY. AND IT BECOME A DEFINITION OF POST-MODERNISM.

PLAY TIME

IN THIS CLASS, WE HAVE ANOTHER FILM CALL "PLAYTIME" BY JACZUES. EVENTHOUGH WE WATCH JUST SOME PART OF IT BUT IT MADE ME FEEL VERY INTERESTED WITH MANY MANY THING IN THE FILM. I DONT KNOW HOW OLD OF THIS MODERNISM FILM BUT ALL THE IDEA THE GAVE ME FROM THIS FILM IS ALL NEW AND PRETTY AMAZING. THE FILM START FROM THE THE AIRPORT THAT MADE OUT OF GLASS VERY TRANSPARENCY WITH THE METAL FRAMING. THE OVER ALL BUILDING LOOKS FUTURISTIC AND THE SURROUNDING OF THIS HIGH RISE BUILDING LOOK NOT SO DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER IN THAT MUCH. INSIDE THE AIRPORT THEY SHOWS THE NEW DESIGN OF CHAIR AND FURNITURE WHICH IS TRIED TO RESPOND THE REACTION OF HUMAN BEING BUT IT LOOKS PRETTY RIDICULOUS FOR ME BECAUSE EVERYTHING LOOKING UNCOMFORTABLE EVEN IF IT DESIGN IN A BEAUTIFUL APPEARANCE. I THINK IT'S THE PART  THAT THE FILM WANT TO MADE FUN WITH THE MODERNISM. THE STORY BEGIN WITH THE TOUR GROUP OF AMERICAN LADIES ARRIVING IN PARIS. IN THIS PART,OBVIOUSLY, WE CAN SEE EVERYONE LOOKS VERY SIMILAR; THE HAIR, DRESS, SHOES, BAG EVEN THE CHARACTER ALSO LOOK VERY ALIKE. AND THEN IT'S ABOUT MONSIEUR HULOT IN THE OFFICE BUILDING. IN THE OFFICE BUILDING, IT SHOWS THE  CUBE THAT ARE STAND VERY ORGANIZE AND EVERYONE GOT THEIR OWN CUBICAL. THIS OFFICE, I GUESS, IT'S THE OFFICE OF SHOPPING MALL SOMETHING. PEOPLE IN EACH CUBE LOOKS VERY SIMILAR AND IF WE LOOKING FROM THE TOP VIEW, THE ORGANIZATION OF THE CUBICAL MADE THIS SPACE LOOK LIKE THE MAZE. LOOK CLOSELY, EACH CUBE CAN ENTER IN ALMOST EVERY SIDE BY THE IRONIC SYSTEM OF THE DOOR. ANOTHER INTERESTING THING IS THEY MADE THE "GOLDEN SILENCE" BY MAKE THE MOST QUITE DOOR SLAM. I LIKE THIS IDEA VERY MUCH IT KIND OF SARCASTIC THE MODERNISM IN THE VERY CREATIVE IDEA.  ACTUALLY, THE DETAIL OF THIS FILM IS A LOT, FOR EXAMPLE, THE LIFT ; IF WE LOOK OUTSIDE IT IS LIKE A TOY THAT MOVE THROUGH EACH HOLE, THE PRODUCT IN THE SHOW ROOM THAT IS NOT THE ORDINARY THING. I THINK THIS FILM TRY TO MADE FUN WITH MODERNISM IN EVERY DETAIL IN A POSITIVE WAY AND IT SHOWS FROM EVERY SCENE THAT VERY UNIVERSAL AND CAN BE APPLY IN ALL WHOLD WORLD. IT WOULD BE A GOOD CHANCE IF STILL HAVE TIME TO WATCH THIS FILM UNTIL IT FINISH BECAUSE IT GAVE ME A LOT OF IDEA AND THE SENSE OF FUTURE WORLD THAT NEARLY COME INTO OUR LIFE.
