MIES VAN DER ROHE

In the wolrd of architecture, it would be very strange if someone put a lot of flower full up on the marble wall or some architect wear a barbie dress with colorful pattern. Most of the the architect try to make everything clear and abstract with reasonable that is why we are so different with the pure artist. We all learn in the process of architecture with the quote of "Less is more"
I am one of the student whose always heard this quote and actually, it's the sentence that I often heard in my project'critics and I was wondering how this quote happen and why everyone love to use it?
In my history class today, we've learn about destijl in neoplasticism with his grid and color. Beside, we haved learn about Mies Van Der Rohe whose created
"Less is more".

His work is clearly describe "less is more" start from his furniture, "Barcelona chair". It is the chair that looks quite un comfortable. It's look simple and all the curve and line shows up very clear. In my point of view, it would be a very first simple furniture design in that time, it's like he try to make everything really into mass production. The chair with only fuction  no decorative use only 2 materials.

Mies Van Der Rohe created many amazing and successful architecure not only the bauhaus but it's a lot. For example, The house in america with only 3 panels cover by glass. Another thing that is really inpired me from Mies would be his presentation. He made a collage to describe his idea. And it's look very interesting and clearly describe his thought. Actually, i've never seen someone did it before, it's very graphical. I think he is not just less is more but in his "Less", he has already thought a thousand times about his work in every unit of decoration. Most people call him "God of details" and it's really show in his work. His collage can show all the main structure and detail of the house. One of the clearly example is the pattern of the marble wall in Barcelona pavilian. Each marble with a very nice cut. It's like he try to cut it and when he put it together it become like a butterfly wing. And this wall become an attractive one in this pavillian.

In conclusion, I am very glas that I knew the one whoe created this quote and he is inspired me a lot just only I listen to his story from power point. I think his idea and style are very clear and some day I will try to be attractive and amart like him, he created my goal now :)

Le Corbusier

After I was born, I saw my father sitting very still on his over size table with a very huge paper.
He always sit in that position with his smiling face.
He is an architect and he's my very first painting teacher.
He teach me a lot about art and persuade me to this architecture world.

The first architect he introduce me to is "Le Corbusier"
Honestly, I can say that I know nothing about him but he is the one that I always hear about.
As the time pass, I tried so hard to study about architecture to became one of the member in faculty of architecture. And I was gettine to know "him".

Finally, I became a student in this faculty as I want to be.
And here I am in the history class, feeling so excited.
In this class,we were drove back to the very early time of modernism and art and
"Le Corbusier".
He try to develop architecture in mass product.
Obviously, It shows in his style, his out fit; circle glasses, black and white suite.
The core of his thinking is
"MASS AND SURFACE TELLING EVERYTHING"
He said " Architecture is the masterly correct and magnificent play to masses brought together in light".

He try to conclude all of his idea to be shown in the next and next architect generation about "what the modern architecture is?". And it came up with the very simple 5 points that we use until now
1. The Support or pilotis
2. The flat roof or roof garden
3. The interior walls
4. The horizontal windows
5. The facade

                                                                               villa savoy

The very clear about the example of this idea is "Villla Savoy" in 1929-1931
Actually, I think we all know about this name and this architecture.
But how many peoples know about the idea of  this house.
1. Supports are spaced degulated and necessary to elevate the first floor of ground
2. The flat roof is meant to serve another domestic purpose, such as gardening or relaxation
3. Interior non load bearing walls are free for arrangement within open plan
4. Horizontal windows provide more even illumination than do verticle one
5. The non load bearing facade can be freely design.
In my point of view, even if it's all not true for all of his idea,
I feel very amazing with his thought and I think it effect a lot in that time.
He created the balance between the very historical time and the modernism. for example, he thought about the idea of human dimension in the very historical time and bring him to fit in his design.
And also his work after that shown the development in the modernism world.
For example Unite d’ Habitation is another interested one.
I think i can see the relationship between his drawing and this building.
He brought us back to the very simple line and primary color.
But it's surve the function of the habitant and clearly shown the idea of mass, surface and light.
After that time to 2011, his work is still very famous and became the very big part of architectural student. I think that what he has tried to do is very succesful and  I hope that the 5 idea of his theory would bring me to do the architectural design as good as him in someday.

A first half of Metropolis silent film

This week we were watching the the first part of very classic movie call " Metropolis" by Fritz Lang . It's is 83 years old and this film has influenced many new film until now.

         “Metropolis”
is not just a science fiction film but a work of class warfare, an another way to comparable attack on capitalism. The controlling rich symbolized by the greedy Joh Frederson and the lowly slave workers working down in the underground city. It is also a story of father and son struggles and the mad power of science to create mankind in its own image. Actually, I was very interseting at the very first of the story. I havent watched the black and white film before in my life and it was amazing! I am not feel so strange with the color or feel like it need some more color. It looks very classic and can show every feeling as good as the color film. The movie was start off with images of machine and engines. The scene was about the industrial wokers, they presented by make all of them look nothing different: same hair same cloth same shoes and even their walking step is also thesame. Obviously, it shows the feeling of workers' life, thier life were boring and no civilization. This film make me think about the "mob", is it possible for this film to want to make something to be sarcastic to the social. "Flash Mob" is the kind of mob that a group of people are making something for example dancing together at the crossroad, standing and doing nothing together in the supermarket. The concept is to be sarcastic about some topic, sone problem and they do same thing to gether at the same time to make it to be a big impact for the watcher. from the movie, it's like they try to show "how boring they are" by this scene of film, and if it a mob, it was successful.. it impact me a lot. ?
The fisrt half of this story is about Freder whose dad is built everything in this city, He grown up in the world of rich people, convenience and  fully of happiness while the industrial workers are leaving underground, have a fully different life with freder. But one day, Freder was playing with her girl friends as usaul and he saw the mysterious girl, She was coming with many kids and then go back to the door. Freder try to find that girl, so he came in to the door where the industrial is located. And the story begin, from this scene, it's compose of a lot of machine and workers whose work all the time. In the underground world, it's like another city, they have similar house, no decoration and not much window or door. It's definitely different from the architecture in the town of freder.  After he found this place, he tried to changed it by telling his father but it's not seem to be work. What freder willl do is the thing that I look forward to know in the next week class.
In my point of view, the architecture in this film is very amazing, it's like the future world, despite this film was built in 83 years ago, the hight rise building with autometic system and made out of glass, transportation by a sky train and private air plane. The craxy doctor who built a human robot. It is just amazing. I think that this film is not just an influence for many film director but it's also inspired many architecture, scientis or the workers to do something new. I am just waiting to watch the next half of it, hope that I'll got inspired from this film again...

"From Bauhaus to our House"

"From Bauhaus to our House"
is the very interesting book, I spent 3-4 days to finish this reading,
may be it's because the language that I am not get uses to it yet,
although it still attempted me to try to finish this reading.

According from the book, Mr.Wolfe mainly talked about "Architecture Movement", He wants to argue about the ideology that has gotten in the way of common sense. In the time of WW2, it was the origins of the international style in Europe, Mr.Wolfe attempts to trace the development of that style. It's like the origin of modern architecture also. After I read, I thought about the word "composite" that is how the International Style became -like a small private group of people which is compose of ideologist with a great mission. But this idea of "composite" came to me because Mr.Wolfe has a pessimistic oppinion to the modernism. He thought it was to foist modern design upon an unwilling world,in his view, though the ''composite'' may not be try to force us all to live in stark boxes as it once did, it is all the same devoted to the making of an inaccessible architecture.

In my point of view, it's interesting in the way of his writing, the comparison from his oppinion for example the comparison between the nature and the perspectives of the great European architects and thinkers to the American is very interesting. Though I agree with  Mr. Wolfe's irritation at the extent to which many contemporary architects seem to make words their priority. But there is still a basically nonideological pierce to the best of the modernist work around today, an understanding of the values of the graphic, a sense of what makes a well-composed building. While I am not the much agree with his idea about the mass production, it was happen due to the amount of people that is increasing with no limits, Mass production has been created to serve the demand and supply of people to be balance. It haven't destroy anything, may be it's just decrease the need of original hand made, but the world still change to serve the needs and wants of human.

However i am not argue in his book but I dont think it's all true. He would be a good listener but may be he is not a good watcher. It's like understand all the theory and he judged the work by thier theory, which means he understands it only as a prototype for a universal architectural style, and not as a unique and even profound work of art; he has listened to the words, not looked at the architecture.
